Florin Paunescu

Coach Paunescu earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sport, emphasis in fencing, from the National Academy of Physical Education and Sport, Bucharest, Romania. He also holds a Level I (highest attainable) license in fencing pedagogy. From 1994 to 1996, Paunescu was the Head Coach for the Romanian Junior National Sabre Team. He was the Deputy Coach for the Romanian National Sabre Team from 1996-1998. For the years 1999-2002, Paunescu was both the Coach of the Romanian Olympic Women’s Sabre Team and at the BNR Bucharest Sports Club. Coach Paunescu arrived in the United States in 2003; he coached at several Dallas, Texas area schools. Coach Paunescu came to Arizona in late 2003 and became a head coach at the Arizona Fencing Center. Here, as in Texas, Paunescu has brought fencing to several local area schools. Paunescu became the owner of the Arizona Fencing Center in 2008 where he continues to develop fencers of all ages. Florin is the winner of many European Sabre titles, including the prestigious European Cup gold medal in 1982.

Coach Paunescu has developed many fencers who have taken numerous Gold Medals at local events during his tenure at Arizona Fencing Center (AFC).

 

Rachelle Arama

Rachelle began fencing at the age of 17 in Detroit, Michigan under the instruction of Maestro Istvan Danosi, Head Coach of the Wayne State University fencing team. Within one year, she had joined the University of Detroit fencing team and won the first of two Michigan Junior Olympic Championships. The following year she joined the NCAA Championship Fencing team at Wayne State University. Rachelle was the captain of the women’s foil  team as they placed fourth and sixth in the collegiate National Championships.  She placed in the top three in several individual Midwest regional championships. Rachelle discovered the great coaches at AFC and resumed her study of foil fencing under Fencing Master Florin Paunescu. More recently, she has switched to the study of sabre with Coach Paunescu and has resumed competition. Rachelle was a member of the 2014 Veteran Women’s Sabre Team and fenced in the Veteran World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.  Rachelle attended the Coaches’ College offered by USFA at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center and is now an Assistant Moniteur in foil. Rachelle has a great love for the sport of fencing and enjoys sharing it with children, teens, and adults.
